MOSAIC, The Nativity of Christ,
Cappella Palatina, Palermo (Sicily, Italy).
Center is Christ. The Virgin, nimbed, seated facing left with her head tilted right and facing right front. She holds the Christ-child, cross-nimbed, half upright in crib. A ray of light, a light from the heavens, descends from star above infant’s head. Scene is in a cave. Ox and ass lean their heads over the crib. Joseph, nimbed, is bottom left, pondering, seated facing left with his head turned back toward nativity. Three Magi on horseback climb (from the left) the mountain which holds the cave. Below the crib, two midwives prepare to bathe the Christ-child. Midwife on L. pours water into the tub. Midwife on right holds the Christ-child, cross-nimbed and nude, on her lap. Above and to right of them, the Magi approach with their gifts. Three angels upper left, nimbed and winged. One angel in upper right, faces right. Another angel, to right of ox and ass, points to the nativity. Inscription top center HXV GENNICIC. Inscription across the top of the panel reads STELLA PARIT SOLEM ROSA FLOREM FORMA DECORUM. ]
Este mosaico de la Natividad (1150) se encuentra en la Capilla Palatina de Palermo (Sicilia, Italia). Sobre la imagen se lee la siguiente inscripción latina:
«Stella parit solem, rosa florem, forma decorem»:
La traducción, en varias lenguas, reza así:
Una estrella parió al sol, una rosa a una flor, la forma a la belleza.
L’estrella pareix el Sol, el roser la flor, la forma la bellesa.
A estrela gerou ao sol; a rosa, à flor; a forma, ao esplendor.
La stella ha partorito il sole, la rosa il fiore, la forma lo splendore.
Der Stern gebiert die Sonne, die Rose die Blume, die Anmut die Holdseligkeit.
A star gave birth to the sun, a rose to a flower, beauty to grace.
The star brings forth the Sun; rose the flower; comeliness splendour.
